Another wonderful partnership was realized last week with Stories That Soar! at Holaway Elementary thanks to the beautiful creative work of the cast and to the belief and support of our friend, Principal Ernie Galaz. Although a little rough around the edges up until the last moments, it all came together to make a real impact on the children in the audience.

Over the weekend, STS! Program Director, Sharon O’Brien, received a heartfelt message from one of the teachers who shared with her that she had grown up learning the importance of MLK’s message from her father, and seeing her student’s “We Have A Dream, too” piece brought her full circle.

As a teacher it isn’t always easy to impart values of equality, peace and empowerment, but thanks to our delivery of their hopes for the future, the children were able to see the importance of having such dreams, as well as the importance of speaking the words publicly as a commitment to that reality.

Dear Stories That Soar! ,

I want to first and foremost thank you for your moving and delightful performance at Holaway last week. I am the Student Teacher for Mrs. McCoy’s First and Second Grade Class, and we were so thrilled to have had four of our Stories included in the performance! On a more personal note, ever since I was old enough to remember, the I have a Dream Speech was recited and discussed with me by my father – a musician, a man of the 60’s, and the mentor of my own Dreams. I worked with the children diligently so that they could begin to understand how important MLK truly was. Our dreams, so beautifully represented by your actors touched me in a way I could never express. Thank you for making my day, and above all, thank you for inspiring my class to continue writing.

Thank you all for making dreams come true– and having fun while we’re at it!
