Who do you think of when you hear “literary hero”? Literary heroes guide us through light and dark. They provide moral insight through their choices, they inspire us to act with courage, and they act as a mirror when we want to feel seen. This year, Literacy Connects is proud to present an expert creator of literary heroes, New York Times bestselling author Sabaa Tahir at Get Connected 2025. Join us at the Westin La Paloma Spa and Resort on Saturday, April 26, 2025 for a meal, interactive activities, and to hear the transformative stories of our students.

About our keynote speaker: Sabaa Tahir is a Pakistani-American author who grew up in the Mojave desert, not too far from our own. Sabaa was an avid reader growing up, consuming fantasy novel after fantasy novel (plus a few of her brother’s comic books). That love of reading flourished into a love of writing, with Sabaa creating An Ember in the Ashes while working night shifts as a copy editor for The Washington Post. Sabaa’s books often focus on heroes, never shying away from complex portrayals of human experiences. Her works include New York Times bestsellers An Ember in the Ashes series, All My Rage, and Heir.

Our History: The Opening Chapter

On July 1, 2011, five organizations – Literacy Volunteers of Tucson, Reading Seed, Stories that Soar!, Reach Out and Read Southern Arizona, and Literacy for Life Coalition – officially merged to become Literacy Connects. In the ten years since then, we’ve grown our programs, staff, and learners; bought and renovated our home on Yavapai Road; developed new ways to better serve our community; and navigated the challenges of going virtual.
