Reach Out and Read Southern Arizona
A Prescription for Success!
Reach Out and Read is a national evidence-based program that promotes early literacy and school readiness in pediatric exam rooms by giving new, developmentally, and culturally appropriate books to children and advice to parents about the importance of reading aloud. Reach Out and Read Southern Arizona partners with pediatric healthcare providers in Cochise, Pima and Santa Cruz counties, as well as the Tohono O’odham and Yaqui Nations, to prescribe books and encourage families to read together.
By building on the unique relationship between parents and health care providers, Reach Out and Read Southern Arizona helps families and communities encourage early literacy skills so children enter school prepared for success.

Last year we worked with 60 pediatric and family practice clinics in Southern Arizona…
“Teen parents were in with their 4 month-old for her first vaccines. I gave them a book with baby faces and explained how much babies like to look at babies and how important it is to read, sing, and talk to their baby. They were so grateful for the information and delighted with how their baby reacted to the book. Both said they had no idea that babies needed to be talked to.”

“Reach Out and Read Southern Arizona helps medical professionals provide holistic medical care beyond medications. It is a resource that helps focus care on the development of personal, emotional, and spiritual aspects of kids growth and development through the imagination and power of reading and books.”

“I’ll never forget when a mom told me that her children love the books that they get at their check ups and that all the books that they have at home are from their visits with me. In one respect it made me sad that these books are the only books that this family have at home. But then in another respect I am so happy to be able to provide these children and their family books to enjoy and especially knowing that without these books they would likely not have any in their home.”
