Congratulations GED Graduates!

Congratulations to our recent GED graduates!

Lindsey Center graduates (L to R) Meredith Parsons (volunteer tutor), Eli Orellana, Manuel Mora, Carolina Sabori, Cydne Bolton (LVT staff), Rafael Perez with his son Irving, Irene Rodriguez and Juan Carlos Rodriguez.

On Wednesday, May 22nd, ten students reached an educational milestone.  Eight students from the Lindsey Learning Center, a partnership between Literacy Volunteers of Tucson and Pima County One Stop, and two students from Literacy Volunteers of Tucson earned a General Equivalency Diploma.

These students participated in the official graduation ceremony sponsored by Pima College Adult Education.  The ceremony was the culminating event for months of perseverance, self-reinvention as a learner, and commitment.  With their new successes in education, they are ready to take on new jobs and further education that many didn’t think were possible.

Most had held the same job for 15 plus years, only to be laid off without adequate skills and knowledge to improve or change careers.  Newly confident: 1 student works full-time, 1 works part-time and will begin electrician training by the Fall, 1 is enrolled and excelling at Empire Beauty School, 3 are researching job training programs in new careers, 1 plans to return to barber school, 1 will attend Pima Community College in the fall, and 1 is settling a disability claim.

“You saved my life. I thought my time for school was over. Thank you for believing in me.” – M. Mora

“This place (the Lindsey Center) gave me a chance to recover my self-esteem.” – Rafael Perez
