Students visit Habitat for Humanity complex

Students in the picture are from the Literacy Connects Writing Workshop. They are asking questions about the nine houses that are being built by Habitat for Humanity on Yavapai Road next to Literacy Connects. They visited on May 28. They went there to learn about the houses that have been under construction since October.

Before the visit, students in the class had read about Habitat for Humanity and discussed the advantages of renting or owning a house. Amy Reichgott of the Habitat staff met the students on May 28 and explained how to apply for a Habitat House. At the construction site, they met Mike Tate, site supervisor for the Minton Court project. He showed visitors the homes and explained the building process.

After the tour, Ms. Reichgott had lunch with the students at Literacy Connects. The discussions about Habitat for Humanity continued. They were nice people.

My Dream House
By Omar Cunningham
I want my dream house to be on the hill in front of the beach with a big backyard and a fireplace to keep away mosquitos. I want grass for sure and flowers or banana trees. I don’t like to be crowded, but I like one or two fruit trees in the backyard.

My dream house would have three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and walk-in closets with sliding doors. It would have a big kitchen with a living room and porch. It would have wood tile floors in the kitchen and living room. I would like a stainless steel refrigerator.

I would like my dream house to be beside the ocean and made of bricks. On the inside, I want it to have 3 big bedrooms and tile floors. It would have 3 bathrooms, a large kitchen, a large living room, a big flat-screen TV with surround sound, and a big backyard with a heated pool.

My dream house is 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and a big kitchen and a living room with carpet. I would like a big TV and 2 sofas. The back yard will have grass and pine trees and some plants such as roses and bougainvillea. In front, there will be lots of roses and different cactus plants.

In the kitchen, I will have a dishwasher, refrigerator and stove.

My Dream Apartment

My Dream House would be in an apartment complex. It would have 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and a small kitchen with a good microwave. My bedroom would have a king-size bed. The apartment would have two big-screen TVs, one in the bedroom and one in the living room. There would be a game room in a different area of the apartment complex. There would be a swimming pool and a basketball court.

What I learned about Habitat for Humanity
By Mae Nelson
I learned that they have classes to show you how to fix your hot water heater. Also, they show you how to fix your icebox and how to take care of your house. They also told us that to own the house, you have to put 250 hours of hard work helping build it.

Habitat helps people achieve their goals
By Omar Cunningham
Habitat is a good company to work with if you make a little bit of money. What I don’t like is the way they get too personal in my life before they help me. That is the only problem with them. I might not like it, but other banks want to know the same information. I really love that Habitat is great in bringing more people into the neighborhood. That is a very good idea for real. I like how they help people to achieve their goals in life. That’s nice.

The Habitat house is livable. It seems to be big enough because they have three bedrooms and bathrooms with a big garage to park your car. They know how to save on the cost of utilities.

Helping to build Habitat houses
By Jesus Lopez
What I learned about building houses with Habitat for Humanity. Owners are required to donate their time to help. Not only that, we also learned about skills for building houses.

We learned how to save electricity and water. We learned about how to reduce our need for air conditioning, for example. The homes don’t have dishwashers in order to save water and expenses.

What’s needed to build a Habitat House
By Alicia Perez
I learned what to do if I want to buy a Habitat for Humanity house. I need a good credit history and to work 250 hours and to help each other build the houses. I also would need an income. The houses built by Habitat for Humanity may have 5 bedrooms or 4 or 2 bedrooms. I know they come with a stove and icebox (refrigerator). The houses will have electricity and water. They will have a garage for two cars. They will be painted brown.

I would like to see the houses when they finish building them.

Habitat people patient with questions
By Rania Tutu
I didn’t go on the field trip, but I learned the houses are big and beautiful. The Habitat for Humanity people and volunteers who work over there are so nice and patient. The students asked a lot of questions and the Habitat people answered them. Thanks for giving us time and listening to us. I wish that I could have been there with the group.
