What’s happening at Mission Manor Elementary School and the Sunnyside Literacy Zone? Everything! The Sunnyside Literacy Zone is one of two focus areas founded by the Literacy for Life Coalition, and being implemented by all the merged programs of Literacy Connects, local community members, the Sunnyside School District, University of Arizona’s Department of Education, the Pima County Public Library, Pima College Adult Education, Parents as Teachers, Make Way for Books and others. Here’s a glimpse into this hive of activity:

  • A neighborhood literacy council engaged to create a sustainable culture of literacy
  • Neighborhood volunteers reading one-on-one with children
  • Parents working with tutors to improve math, reading and computer skills
 in the evening
  • Parents learning to speak English
  • Pre-school children starting kindergarten ready to learn thanks to free books
 and early literacy coaching provided by their pediatricians
  • Pre-school children learning about peace and acceptance
  • Fourth graders receiving after-school homework help
  • Students writing more than 250 original stories just for fun
  • School libraries enhanced
  • More books in homes
  • Daycare providers becoming certified and learning how to incorporate books and pre-literacy skill development in young children.
