The Literacy Connects Infusion Project finished its first semester at Mission Manor Elementary School on December 10. The project, which began in August, provides opportunities to learners of all ages through English language acquisition, one-on-one literacy support, and learning through creative expression and arts integration. Nearly 800 volunteer hours have been given so far as part of this project.
The project combines curriculum and volunteer effort from across Literacy Connects’ continuum of programs. The project helped 35 student readers toward grade-level reading through intensive coaching with Reading Seed volunteers. On twice-weekly Family Education Nights, about 35 adults attended English language and basic literacy classes while about 20 children participated in readers’ theater, got help with homework or engaged in language and reading-enrichment activities. More than 600 original stories were submitted to the Magic Box leading up to a Stories That Soar! performance to the entire school community on Oct. 14.
On behalf of all our participants, thank you to all who generously supported the project with your time and resources. You are helping improve literacy in the Mission Manor community!
