Exploring the Fantastic, Interesting, Wonderful, Beautiful, Huge Universe Where We Live
Writing Workshop
Students have been looking at, and writing about, their world, and the universe around them. Student Omar Cunningham explains:
I wonder if there is another place that is nice in the World like Earth. I would like to visit to see how comfortable it is to live because I want to tell the rest of the World that Earth is not the only place one can live. I don’t know about space but I hear people say it is nice. I want to go and see for myself.
Francisca Peraza — I looked at a picture that is in the shape of a butterfly. There are different colors: white, orange, gray, yellow, and pink. The butterfly is made with gases and with the light of the sun.
Jose Guereque — This reminds me of fire by explosions, or big butterfly wings because of the colors: red, white, orange, pink, green, and red.
Omar Cunningham — I look at the picture of the galaxy and I see a lot of colorful stars. Most of them look like fire with flame, white, and lots of color. I think that they are gorgeous, white, red green and orange. I have never seen stars like these before in my life, but I’m grateful to learn more about the stars. For me, this is good.
Barinedum Menebie – I like this image of the Planet Earth, especially the moon, because if we did not have the moon, the whole earth will be dark. The picture of Earth is beautiful, but the people in it are wicked and evil. To me, the look is so colorful, but the people in it don’t think so. I see a lot of different colors such as blue, green, white, and gray. It reminds me of the different colors that we have in our world.
Omar Cunningham — I am like a bird’s eye viewing over the world. I want to tell you how pretty the view is from above the Earth. I should tell my friends and family to go and get a bird’s eyes and come with me to view the world because you are missing all of the fun standing on Earth. If you come fly with me, you will see that you walk on all of the beauty. I like to be above because I see things that I never have seen before. I want to invite my Jamaican people to leave Earth and come with me to view the world from above. I love everything about the life above Earth because standing below, you don’t know much about the Earth.
Jose Guereque — The planet Earth is big and has different colors of green, white, yellow, blue, and brown.
Mexico, The Yucatan
Francisca Peraza — In the sea off the Yucatan, it was a hurricane because the picture showed the hurricane’s eye in the middle of the sea. They were on the Gulf of Mexico. It was huge, dangerous, and a destroyer.
Grenada
Easlyn Williams – I, Easlyn, was born in Grenada in the month of February, 1937, in a nice neighborhood. I used to sing in concerts and sing in the choir. The neighborhood was very nice and entertaining. Then I travelled to Puerto Rico and I had a frightening experience with my boss, named Robert Bunhard. So I returned to Granada, and I got a job with one Mrs. Cathleen Mungal making roti, and she was a Godsend. She had a big business. She also had hotels: entertained lots of foreigners. And when we had Carnival in Grenada it used to be a blast in her hotel from sunrise to sunset. She used to treat all her workers to the best of her ability. She was wonderful.
Nigeria
Barinedum Menebie — This is a birds-eye view of my home in Nigeria in Ogoni land. In Ogoni, the birds see a lot of pool parties and people. The birds also see a lot of people that take the money from the government and use it for themselves. The birds see a lot of corruption in Nigeria. So, I will say that as I fly over Nigeria, the view brings me a lot of sadness.
Tucson Neighborhoods
Jose Guereque — I live south of 22nd Street in Tucson. The name of the street is Bristol Avenue. My neighborhood is very quiet. At this time of the year, there are a lot of Christmas lights. One house has lots of Christmas lights in the front yard. Icicles hang on the soffit. There is also a Santa Claus inflatable balloon. Another house has three wire reindeer in the front yard.
Omar Cunningham — I live in Tucson on 201 E. Yavapai Road and that is the only state I have lived in so far. I have seen a lot of people come and go because of all the drama that started on Yavapai Road. But all of the drama in my neighborhood is still going on because of the people the landlady accepts to come there to live. Some of them are crackheads and they bring shopping carts from the store and leave them there.
Francisca Peraza — One day, I saw my crazy neighbor who looks crazy because was wearing very short shorts and he didn’t use a shirt on his body. I describe the neighborhood as quiet and there are cars, trees, people, dogs, cats, kids, birds, ants, plants, crickets, cockroaches, chickens, doves and roosters. The houses look clean, nice, and pretty. The people look different. The people are normal, quiet, happy, sad, and hyper. Close to my house, I have the jail building. The building is white and it has 12 floors. It has police officers, prisoners, and jail employees. In the yard, they have trees and sand. There are some windows in the building.
