AmeriCorps Positions Available

ac_0AmeriCorps was founded in 1994 and has since put over 80,000 Americans to work in jobs that directly impact our communities. AmeriCorps positions are an excellent way to get involved, and Literacy Connects is looking for two AmeriCorps members to begin work as soon as possible. These positions provide ample opportunity to work with children and young adult learners in the field of literacy.

Literacy Connects Basic Literacy Tutor – Youth – 300 Hours

The Literacy Connects’ Adult Basic Literacy (ABL) program provides classes and tutoring options for adult learners in the Tucson community, to help them improve their basic reading, writing, and math skills. We focus on serving adults with less than a 6th grade equivalent in their basic literacy skills.

The ABL program serves approximately 250 students annually. We provide student-centered, strengths-based tutoring and classes that allow learners to build on their knowledge and experiences and increase their self-efficacy. The ABL program is an “on-ramp” to further opportunities—job training, attainment or advancement, GED programs, or college entry.

Literacy Connects Adult Basic Literacy (ABL) program has one position for a 300-hour AmeriCorps member to help us build capacity in serving high school youth who are aging out of school or struggling to stay in school. Professional development through our exceptional tutor training is an added bonus.

Upon completion, the AmeriCorps member will receive a $1,200 educational award and a Certificate in Civic Leadership from Prescott College (4 college credits – $1,400).

Literacy Connects Volunteer Support Assistant/Reading Seed Coach -Youth – 900 Hours

Literacy Connects’ Reading Seed programs coach children in reading so they don’t fall behind. Our programming teaches parents the importance of reading to their children, helps young people experience the power of words and ideas through the arts, and puts books in the hands of people who need them.

Last fiscal year, Literacy Connects gave over 94,000 books to children and adults in need. It’s a fact that “Children with as few as 25 books in the family household completed on average two more years of schooling than children raised in homes without any books.”(Salon)

This ten month position offers a living allowance, $2,775 educational award at completion, and participation in monthly training qualifies the AmeriCorps member for a Certificate in Civic Leadership from Prescott College (4 college credits – $1,400).
