Dr. Maria Sifontes was born in Puerto Rico. Her family moved to the mainland about eighteen years ago and to Arizona in 1996. “As the second of seven kids, I have always loved children. My earliest memories are of my dad driving all of his brood to the local library exchange, where we would spend Saturdays reading, buying and getting books. Our home was overflowing with books, so it is no surprise that we all loved to read. Eventually I grew up, became a pediatrician, married a family physician and had four boys that inherited our love of books and learning.”
What do you value most about being a Reach Out and Read Southern Arizona provider?
I have been a RORSA provider for many years, initially, with El Rio Health Center and now, with Carondelet Medical Group in Sahuarita. It is humbling to be able to offer some children the only books they will ever own. I have had parents tell me many years later, that their child still treasures the books that we gave them! But I know for a fact, that no matter how many books you have, a new one draws a smile in almost every child.
What is the single most important tip that you like to share with your patients?
I love to remind parents that reading to their child is a wonderful bonding experience. It teaches a child to love books, improves the chances of doing well in school and creates memories that will be unforgettable to all!
What is your favorite book to share with families in the exam room and why?
I am looking forward to the day when I may give my sons my favorite book to read to their own children; “I Love You Forever” by Robert Munsch. The reason is obvious!
