LVT ELAA (English Language) classes take place at 22 different schools, libraries and community centers around Tucson.

Meeting with adults who want to speak, write and read in English is the work of volunteers in the ELAA program.

ELAA tutors work in teams in schools, libraries, churches and community centers where they observe, share, and support each other as well as their students. During training tutors develop teaching skills and commitment to the LVT community. After training, they continue to reflect, share and grow as learners.

English classes meet for 1 ½ to 2 hours twice a week and conversation groups meet for the same amount of time once a week. The educational level of ELAA students varies from people who do not read and write in their native language to college graduates. What all of the students have in common is a strong desire to improve their English in order to meet their own specific goals. Their motivation and their energy drive their classes.

LVT staff and tutors work together on training and professional development. This community of lifelong learning begins at new volunteer orientations and continues throughout each tutor’s relationship with LVT. Members of this community also share their enthusiasm and their feelings of personal satisfaction from their relationships with their students.
