Become an LVT Tutor
“Now I am finding that far from ‘knowing best what is good for my students,’ I am challenged and involved in one of the most creative and rewarding experiences of my life.” – Sally, ELAA Tutor
Volunteers are the heart of soul of Literacy Volunteers of Tucson. All LVT tutors are volunteers. They provide almost all direct contact with students. LVT volunteers come from many different backgrounds and experiences. This variety enriches our whole program.

Attend a Volunteer Orientation (click here for schedule)
STEP 2:
Complete the Volunteer Application and sign the Tutoring Policies and Procedures you receive at Orientation
STEP 3:
Complete Background Check (you may do this yourself by clicking here, it only takes a couple of minutes) If you have a fingerprint card, you may submit a copy of it instead of doing the background check.
STEP 4:
Schedule and Attend Tutor Training (click here for upcoming training dates and times)
After attending an orientation, if you would like to become a tutor, you sign up for Tutor Training in either Basic Literacy or ELAA. Pre-registration is required. Click here for upcoming LVT Tutor Training Sessions.
Cost of the training is $50. This fee helps us cover the expense of training and materials. Scholarships are available.
We encourage other organizations that are interested in providing tutoring to contact us about training opportunities. The requested fee for training for non-LVT volunteers is $100.
During the training, you will be matched with a student in the Basic Literacy program or you will become part of a team at an ELAA site.
You may use our extensive library for materials, and our staff is available during our office hours to answer your questions. We have two photocopiers for you to copy materials. In addition, LVT offers a variety of ongoing learning sessions to help you understand and better assist your student(s).
Click here for Frequently Asked Questions about tutoring.
If you prefer not to tutor, we have many other volunteer opportunities. Come to the Volunteer Orientation to learn more.
As a tutor, you will be helping someone to improve his or her life – and enriching yours at the same time.
