Basic Literacy ‘Menu’ of Services

Our menu of services for Basic Literacy students is growing.

The menu is designed to offer multiple modes of learning to our literacy students—individual tutoring, classes, computer-based learning, etc. It also allows us to engage students immediately! Everyone starts with an interview and then is assigned by the Program Manager or Asst. Program Manager to a combination of options on the menu. Many students can start their learning journey the same day or next day!

Students referred from the Pima County One Stop are given priority in getting them started in our menu options. Please refer any clients that you have who score below the 6th grade level in reading and/or language. We can help! While we are not a GED program, we can help your clients prepare to enter a GED program by improving their reading, writing, and basic math skills. We can also assist clients in raising their TABE scores for entry into job training programs.

If you have questions about the menu of services, please contact Edie Lantz Leppert (elantz@lovetoread.org), Basic Literacy Program Manager or Susan Friese (sfriese@lovetoread.org), Asst. Basic Literacy Program Manager, at 882-8006 or Cydne Bolton (cbolton@lovetoread.org), Asst. Basic Literacy Program Manager.

Menu of Services for Basic Literacy students:

1:1 tutoring—Incoming students are placed on a waiting list to be matched with 1:1 tutors as they are available, but not every student may need this option.

Tutoring Centers–The Tutoring Centers take place in the computer lab and the lab is staffed with a team of 3 – 4 tutors. Tutors can help students work on reading, writing, math, and computer skills. They can help students discover online learning opportunities that students can continue at home. Our Tutoring Centers are at our office at 2850 E Speedway.

Classes–New classes for students!

  • Health Careers Student Study Group–This class is designed for students who want to work in the healthcare field. An LVT tutor, who is a retired RN, facilitates a class to help students learn about health care through hands-on activities. This experiential learning will then support the students in their reading of health-related materials. The class is designed to help students who want to get into healthcare training programs by working with skills, vocabulary, and abbreviations that they will need in training. This class runs for 6 weeks. It meets at LVT on Wednesday evenings
  • Reading & Understanding—This class is designed for students who struggle with reading comprehension.  The facilitators model thinking strategies to improve reading comprehension, work on vocabulary, and incorporate writing. The class reads a book together, does a lot of talking and writing, and builds a strong community of learners. For many learners, this is the first book that they’ve ever finished! This class runs for 8 weeks and we are offering both a morning session and an evening session. Students are also encouraged to attend the tutoring center on other days for homework help, in addition.
  • Writers’ WorkshopWriting is a skill to be practiced and experienced, and students are encouraged to respond to various invitations to write. The class will focus on composition and writing for authentic purposes and audiences. Spelling and grammar are secondary to getting thoughts out of one’s head and onto paper. As the students develop confidence in composing and expressing their thoughts, they will also begin to discover patterns in spelling and explore varied sentence structures. The class will run for 8 weeks and will be taught by a team of tutors. It will meet in the early afternoon, immediately following a Reading & Understanding class, so students can do both things back-to-back.
  • Math—This group is designed for students who need to work on math skills. It was started with a classroom format but has become general math tutoring for all students in all areas. Students work 1:1 or in a small group with a tutor. Tutors can provide materials or students can bring their own textbooks or projects to work on during the session. Math tutoring group meets in the late afternoons on Mondays and Wednesdays at LVT.
  • Reading Alive!—This exciting new offering is a opportunity for students (and tutors) of all levels and interests to come together to experience real literature. Reading Alive! is a combination of live reading and book club. Volunteer tutors and guests will read aloud from their favorite works of fiction, poetry, or nonfiction and facilitate conversations around these texts. Participants will have the chance to hear and respond to literature and discuss how the text relates to their lives and experiences.
  • Bonus classes—These short-term classes allow the regularly-scheduled classes to take a break and yet gives the students an opportunity to continue learning new content in new ways. This is especially important for students who need to get a specific number of hours of instruction each week. We have offered the following bonus classes—book clubs with Reading Alive!, Painless Punctuation, and Hot Topics in Health—and are open to more!
